The uses and applications of Cobalt may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cobalt are blocks; rings; inserts; and segments.

About Cobalt Metal. Cobalt is a grey, ductile and ferromagnetic metallic element. The metal is present in nature in dispersed form so that it is commercially produced as a byproduct of the mining and processing of other ores, such as copper and nickel, in a way that its output cannot be increased without an increase in the market of the primary metals.

It must be stored in a sealed container, in a cool and dry area. Also, it is necessary to protect from acids.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cobalt Metal are listed below.

  • Cobalt sulfide ores + limestone + coal (smelting),
  • Nickel matte/nickel-copper matte + hydrogen (pressure leaching/reduction; coproduced with nickel),
  • Lateritic ore (pressure leaching/solvent extraction/electrolysis; coproduced with nickel),
  • Copper-cobalt sulfide ores (ore roasting/acid leaching/electrolysis; byproduct of copper production)

The uses and applications of Cobalt may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cobalt are blocks; rings; inserts; and segments.

Until de 20th century, most of the Cobalt extracted was used as a blue coloring agent for glass and pottery, although nowadays it is mainly employed in its metallic form. It is commonly added as a bonding agent in cemented carbides, and used as cutting tools for high-strength materials. Other applications involve using Cobalt in several alloys, such as magnetic cobalt-rare earth, satellite, and super alloys, extensively employed in aircraft engines, turbine vanes, and blades.
