About Lithium Carbonate. Lithium Carbonate (a.k.a. Li2CO3) is an inorganic salt, a white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, but insoluble in most organic solvents. It is an important industrial chemical, used in a wide variety of processes. Since 1949, the clinical value of this salt has been recognized, and lithium carbonate is used in the treatment of some medical disorders.
Lithium Carbonate Handling. Lithium oxides, hydroxide, and carbonate are strong bases, and their water solutions can be very caustic. In this case, Lithium carbonate is not flammable and very little toxic when handling and is usually transported and stored in metal drums in a cool, dry area. It may also be shipped in a polyethylene-lined fiber drum. This chemical should be kept away from strong acids. The salt is very harmful to aquatic life, so overseas shipping must be taken with extra precautions. Shipments of lithium carbonate require no hazardous shipping labels. Shipments by post, parcel, air, water, rail, or truck are acceptable within each carrier's weight limits and packaging requirements.
Lithium Carbonate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Lithium Carbonate are listed below.
- Brine + sodium carbonate (concentration followed by precipitation),
- Lithium rich ores + sodium carbonate (carbonate extraction process),
- Sodium carbonate + lithium sulfate (or chlorate),
- Lithium rich ores + sulfuric acid + sodium carbonate + calcium hydroxide (acid extraction process)
Lithium Carbonate Uses. The uses and applications of Lithium Carbonate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Lithium Carbonate are technical grade (98% minimum purity) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP)/pharmaceutical grade (99% minimum purity)
