About Nickel. Nickel is a metallic element with atomic number 28, it is a transition metal, and member of group 10 of the periodic table. Nickel was first isolated in 1751, with industrial production beginning in 1838. In 1870, nickel’s demand, and its production grew rapidly, after the discovery of its use in alloy steels. Nickel, when alloyed to other elements, increase the material’s strength, toughness and corrosion resistance. Currently, nickel is essential to the iron and steel industry and has various uses in the production of specialty/engineering materials.

Since nickel is produced in great quantity, it is usually shipped in railroad tank cars or by marine transportation. It should be stored in ventilated areas, away from heat and sources of ignition. Fine dust generation should also be prevented since it can form flammable or explosive mixture with air. Nickel ore is very dangerous and in some places as Indonesia prohibited to be shipped. It is prone to a phenomenon called liquefaction, in which the water separates from the ore due to moisture and ever-changing temperature in the sea. The fluid dynamics involved in this process cause the whole cargo to slide to one side, affecting the ship’s stability and balance, making it highly vulnerable to capsizing.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Nickel are listed below.

  • Nickel oxide + metallurgical coke (electric furnace reduction/electrolysis),
  • Lateritic ore (pressure leaching/solvent extraction/electrolysis),
  • Nickel oxide + metallurgical coke (electric furnace reduction/electrolysis),
  • Nickel matte/nickel-copper matte + hydrogen (pressure leaching/reduction)

The uses and applications of Nickel may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Nickel are ingots; pellets; shot; sponge; electrolytic; and powder.
