The uses and applications of o-Xylene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of o-Xylene are 99%; free of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide; technical grade (95% minimum purity); and research grade (99.9% minimum purity).

About o-Xylene. o-Xylene (a.k.a. Orthoxylene) is an aromatic hydrocarbon based on benzene with two methyl substituents, found in petroleum and coal tar. It is an important commercial isomer among the xylenes group (benzene derivatives). The most important application of orthoxylene is in the production of phthalic anhydride, widely used to produce esters, which are plasticizers for synthetic polymers. Exposure to o-xylene can lead to irritation on the skin, eyes, and respiratory system.

All xylene isomers should be stored in closed containers with appropriate labels in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat and ignition sources.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of o-Xylene are listed below.

  • Mixed xylenes (fractionation)
