About Carbon Steel. Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate is a carbon steel product with more than 254 mm in width and at least 4.76 mm in thickness, produced by passing a heated metal piece through rolls in three steps: primary rolling, conditioning, and finish rolling. In the first operation, ingots are broken down into semifinished shapes, such as blooms, billets, slabs, and rounds, by reducing cross-section and increasing length. During the process, the ingots are constantly reheated to achieve a homogeneous temperature, guaranteeing plasticity during rolling. In the conditioning process, some defects from the previous step must be removed, depending on the application of the final products. During the finish rolling, the piece is worked to obtain the desired finished shape of a plate, and a final heat treatment can be applied to enhance the microstructure. Rolling is used for thickness reduction, and an already rolled carbon steel plate can undergo the same process to achieve further reduction and properties enhancement. Due to the heating during forming, hot rolling is a quicker and cheaper process than cold rolling, losing some strength qualities.
The transports used for plates depend on several factors, for example, the location and weight of the plates. These transports can be: rail, truck and ship.
The uses and applications of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate are regular quality (maximum carbon content of 0.33%); structural quality (ASTM A 6); cold-drawing quality; cold-pressing quality; cold-flanging quality; forging quality; and pressure vessel quality (ASTM A 20).
Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Plate is mainly used in applications for which good formability and machinability are required, such as in the construction of bridges, buildings, railroad cars, storage tanks, ships, pressure vessels, pipes, and large machines, among other heavy structures.
