About Ammonium Hydroxide. Ammonium Hydroxide, a solution of ammonia in water with ammonia concentrations typically ranging between 25-30 wt%, is widely used across various industries including food, beverage, chemical, personal care, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers. Recognized for its alkaline properties, the liquid is colorless, volatile, and emits a distinct pungent odor.
The Ammonium Hydroxide production involves dissolving ammonia (NH3) in water to achieve concentrations of around 30 wt%. NH3, in turn, a globally produced compound, plays a pivotal role in fertilizer and chemical manufacturing. The catalytic synthesis process for ammonia, pioneered by Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, has remained largely unchanged since its inception. Different manufacturing routes are determined by the sources of nitrogen and hydrogen, typically involving reactions under high temperature and pressure conditions. Steam reforming with natural gas as a feedstock for hydrogen is a common method employed in the production process.
Ammonia finds its primary application in fertilizer production but also serves diverse roles in chemical synthesis. It acts as a non-aqueous ionizing solvent and serves as a precursor to nitrogen-containing compounds.
Ammonium Hydroxide Handling. Ammonium Hydroxide solutions should be stored in not completed filled plastic, glass, or rubber stoppered bottles in a well-ventilated place away from acids, halogens, and oxidizers. The containers should be tightly sealed in order to avoid gas evaporation from the solution, which is the main reason for the concentration decrease of Ammonium Hydroxide solutions over time. Moreover, Ammonium Hydroxide is usually transported in DOT-111 insulated or non-insulated tank cars that contain safety valves.

Ammonium Hydroxide Uses. The uses and applications of Ammonium Hydroxide may vary according to its specification. Typically, Ammonium Hydroxide is traded in aqueous solutions with 25-30% NH3 content.
