About Tetrahydrofuran. Tetrahydrofuran (a.k.a. THF, Oxolane) is an organic compound, in the cyclic ether class. It is a colorless, odorless liquid, miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is an exceptionally versatile solvent, due to its high polarity. Most of its applications are in the chemical industry, especially in polymer productionand as a solvent.

THF is mainly produced by the process developed by Reppe, in which acetylene and formaldehyde are reacted, followed by hydrogenation and dehydration. This method has near 100% yields under atmospheric pressure with water as a by-product. Other methods include furfural decarbonylation; butadiene oxydation; and propylene oxide isomerization.

Tetrahydrofuran Handling. Tetrahydrofuran is flammable (boiling point 66°C) and should be transported in polyethylene or steel containers (or other non-reactive acid/solvent bottle carriers). For transportation through piping, welded pipes are preferable; special attention should be directed toward the seals in pumps and valves. THF can form peroxides in air, and due to this, a stabilizer, such as 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol (BHT) must be added to it. Storage should be made preferably in closed containers, in cool, dry, well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. If inhaled could cause central nervous system impairment, kidney damage and has been labeled as a potential carcinogen.

Tetrahydrofuran Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Tetrahydrofuran are listed below.

  • 1,4-Butanediol (acid-catalyzed dehydration),
  • n-Butane (oxidation, followed by catalytic hydrogenation),
  • Allyl alcohol (hydroformylation, followed by hydrogenation)

Tetrahydrofuran Uses. The uses and applications of Tetrahydrofuran may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Tetrahydrofuran are HPLC grade (99.9 wt% minimum purity, inhibitor-free); and technical grade (90 wt% minimum purity).
