About Lead Monoxide. Lead Monoxide (a.k.a. Litharge, PbO) is an orange or yellow powder and it is insoluble in water. Commercially, black or gray oxide is produced by reacting molten lead with air or oxygen, by the Barton or by the ball mill process. In the ball mill process, metallic lead balls are tumbled in air, while the Barton pot process oxidizes molten lead droplets at around 430 °C. From a marketing perspective, Litharge is widely utilized in the production of lead-sulfuric acid batteries, where it serves as a key component in battery paste formulations.

Lead Monoxide Handling. Lead monoxide should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, isolated from incompatible substances. Since it has high toxicity, lead compound exposure areas should be identified by signs, legal limits of lead exposure in the air must be respected, and access to those areas should be limited to authorized individuals.

Lead Monoxide Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Lead Monoxide are listed below.

  • Lead (air oxidation)

Lead Monoxide Uses. Lead Monoxide is usually commercialized with a 99.5% minimum purity, in the powder or granular forms.
