About Lead Monoxide. Lead Monoxide (a.k.a. PbO) is an orange or yellow powder and it is insoluble in water. It dissolves in both acids and alkalies. When dissolved in alkalies it forms plumbite ion (PbO2)-2. Lead monoxide releases toxic fumes of lead when heated to decomposition.
Lead monoxide should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, isolated from incompatible substances. Since it has high toxicity, lead compound exposure areas should be identified by signs, legal limits of lead exposure in the air must be respected, and access to those areas should be limited to authorized individuals.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Lead Monoxide are listed below.
- Lead (air oxidation)
The uses and applications of Lead Monoxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Lead Monoxide are chemically pure (CP) grade; fused; and powdered.
