About Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide, a white crystalline powder, represents the natural oxide of titanium, with its primary occurrence observed specifically in rutile ores. This titanium compound holds remarkable significance in various technological realms, functioning as a commodity chemical extensively harnessed across diverse industries. In actuality, a substantial majority of titanium ores undergo processing procedures to yield Titanium Dioxide, consequently establishing its unrivaled status as the most extensively utilized titanium-based substance on a global scale.
Various titanium-rich minerals, including ilmenite and rutile, can serve as starting materials for the production of highly purified Titanium Dioxide. The predominant method employed in Titanium Dioxide production is the chloride process. In this process, the mineral, along with coke and chlorine, undergoes a reaction within a fluidized bed, resulting in the formation of primarily titanium tetrachloride and carbon dioxide. Subsequently, the titanium tetrachloride undergoes purification and conversion to Titanium Dioxide. Another method involves treating ilmenite with sulfuric acid to manufacture the chemical.
Titanium dioxide holds exceptional significance as a white pigment due to its superior scattering capabilities, remarkable chemical stability, and non-toxic nature. Among all white pigments, it surpasses others in terms of its ability to scatter light effectively. Consequently, titanium dioxide stands as the most significant inorganic pigment, accounting for the highest quantity in usage. The majority part of the global production of ilmenite and rutile is dedicated to the production of TiO2 pigments. The remaining portion is utilized for the manufacturing of titanium metal and in the production of welding electrodes.
It is recommended to store Titanium Dioxide in a well-maintained and dry environment, safeguarding it from exposure to elevated temperatures, open flames, or aromatic chemicals. When transporting Titanium Dioxide pigments, they are commonly packaged in paper bags weighing 25 kg (50 lb) or in large bags constructed from woven polypropylene materials.
Titanium Dioxide is largely produced by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride, obtained in turn from chlorination of natural rutile, synthetic rutile derived from ilmenite or even slags rich in TiO2 produced by metallurgical treatment of ilmenite. TiO2 is also manufactured by treatment of ilmenite with sulfuric acid. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Titanium Dioxide are listed below.
- Rutile/titanium slag/anatase + chlorine + sponge coke,calcined (chloride process),
- Hydrate titanium dioxide (sulfate process)
The uses and applications of Titanium Dioxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Titanium Dioxide are dependent on particle sizes, surface treatment, and crystalline forms.
The main application of Titanium Dioxide is as a pigment, providing whiteness and opacity to a variety of products including paints; plastics; papers; foods; cosmetics; and pharmaceuticals. In fact, this chemical accounts for most of the world's production of pigments. Highly refractory, this chemical is also used in cosmetic and skin care products to reflect UV light; in protective coatings for automobile and marine parts; and in optical mirrors.
