About o-Cresol. o-Cresol (a.k.a. 2-Methylphenol) is a colorless, yellow, brown, or pink liquid with an odor that resembles phenol. It is toxic by ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption. It is dangerous because it denatures cellular proteins causing fast poisoning. It is mainly used as disinfectant and it is a precursor of many compounds such as some herbicides and some pharmaceutical products.
o-Cresol Handling. Stainless steel vessels are recommended for storage and transportation of o-Cresol. If exceptional color stability is required, the product should also be stored under nitrogen. Presence of moisture must be avoided, as o-Cresol readily absorbs water. It is transported in heatable tank cars, in tank trucks, or in steel drums with a capacity of ca. 200 L.
o-Cresol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of o-Cresol are listed below.
- o/p-Chlorotoluene (hydrolysis/fractionation, coproduced with m/p-cresol),
- Cresylic acid (fractionation, coproduced with phenol/ m/p-cresol/xylenol, mixed),
- o-Chlorotoluene (base-catalysed hydrolysis, coproduced with m-cresol),
- Phenol + methanol (orthoalkylation, coproduced with 2,6-xylenol),
- p-Toluenesulfonic acid (alkali fusion, byproduct of p-cresol production)
o-Cresol Uses. o-Cresol is commonly traded with a 99% minimum purity.
