About Vanillin. Vanillin is a phenolic aldehyde which is slightly soluble in water and soluble in oxygenated solvents and aromatics. It has the macroscopic appearance of white, crystalline needles and has a sweetish, vanilla-like odor. About 12000 t are produced per year and about 20 t originate from natural sources.

Commercial Grades. Technical grade; USP grade; FCC grade
Uses. Vanillin is mainly used in the production of perfumes; flavoring; pharmaceuticals, laboratory reagent; electroplating brightening agent; laboratory reagent; medicinal excipient; masking agent in cosmetics; and ripening agent.
- Guaiacol + glyoxylic acid (carbonyl addition/oxidation/decarboxylation)
- Sulfite pulp waste liquor (air oxidative cleavage)
Derivatives. Vanillin is used as raw material in the production of the following derivates: L-dopa; methyldopa; and vanilic acid.
