About Saccharin. Saccharin (a.k.a. Benzoic Sulfimide) is a white, odorless crystalline solid. It is available commercially as a dihydrate. It has a very strong sweet taste, so it is used as a non-caloric artificial sweetener in products such as drinks, cookies, candies and medicines. It does not react chemically with other food ingredients.
Chemical Formula. C7H5N1O3S
Commercial Grades. FCC; CP; USP
Uses. Saccharin is used as: artificial sweetener; antistatic agent; resin modifier/accelerator; nickel plating and brightening agent.
- Methyl anthranilate + sulfur dioxide, pure + ammonia (diazotisation/sulfonate formation/sulfonamide formation/sodium salt formation).
Derivatives. Saccharin is used as raw material in the production of the following chemicals: meloxicam; piroxicam; and probenazole.
