About Saccharin. Saccharin (a.k.a. Benzoic Sulfimide) is a white, odorless crystalline solid. It is available commercially as a dihydrate. It has a very strong sweet taste, so it is used as a non-caloric artificial sweetener in products such as drinks, cookies, candies and medicines. It does not react chemically with other food ingredients. Futhermore, saccharin was the first intense sweetener ever introduced, and, for a while, it was the most important intense sweetener.
Saccharin should be stored at room temperature, and be kept away from oxidizing materials.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Saccharin are listed below.
- Methyl anthranilate + sulfur dioxide, pure + ammonia (diazotisation/sulfonate formation/sulfonamide formation/sodium salt formation)
The uses and applications of Saccharin may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Saccharin are Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade; chemically pure (CP) grade; and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade.
Saccharin is most frequently used as its sodium salt. It is used as artificial sweetener; antistatic agent; resin modifier/accelerator; and brightening agent. It is also used in nickel plating; starter feed for livestock; and oral hygiene products. This commodity can be used in the manufacture of derivatives, such as: meloxicam; piroxicam; probenazole
