Saccharin (a.k.a. Benzoic Sulfimide) is a white, odorless crystalline solid. It is available commercially as a dihydrate. It has a very strong sweet taste, so it is used as a non-caloric artificial sweetener in products such as drinks, cookies, candies and medicines. It does not react chemically with other food ingredients. Futhermore, saccharin was the first intense sweetener ever introduced, and, for a while, it was the most important intense sweetener.
