About Saccharin. Saccharin (a.k.a. Benzoic Sulfimide) is a white, odorless crystalline solid. It is available commercially as a dihydrate. It has a very strong sweet taste, so it is used as a non-caloric artificial sweetener in products such as drinks, cookies, candies and medicines. It does not react chemically with other food ingredients.
Chemical Formula. C7H5N1O3S
Commercial Grades. Food Chemical Codex (FCC) grade; chemically pure (CP) grade; and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade.
Uses. Saccharin is used as artificial sweetener; antistatic agent; resin modifier/accelerator; and brightening agent. It is also used in nickel plating.
- Methyl anthranilate + sulfur dioxide, pure + ammonia (diazotisation/sulfonate formation/sulfonamide formation/sodium salt formation).
Derivatives. meloxicam; piroxicam; and probenazole.
