Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Nitrobenzene production from benzene and nitric acid in the United States. The process analyzed in this report is similar to NORAM's adiabatic benzene nitration process, which uses a plug-flow nitrator containing jet-impingement elements.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Nitrobenzene production and related Nitrobenzene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Nitrobenzene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Nitrobenzene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Nitrobenzene plant operating costs (Opex).
The Nitrobenzene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Nitrobenzene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Nitrobenzene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic
The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Benzene Nitration; (2) Purification; and (3) Vent Treatment.
Benzene Nitration. Benzene is preheated and fed the plug-flow nitrator. Nitric acid (65 wt% solution in water) is also preheated and mixed with fresh and recycled (re-concentrated) sulfuric acid before being fed into the reactor. In the nitrator, benzene reacts with nitric acid producing Nitrobenzene. The process operates with a stoichiometric excess of benzene to ensure that complete nitric acid conversion is obtained in the nitrator. The reaction product is sent to a decanter, where crude Nitrobenzene is separated from the spent sulfuric acid. Spent sulfuric acid recovered from separator is flashed concentrated under vacuum. Re-concentrated sulfuric acid is recycled to the nitrator.
Purification. Water removed from spent acid is sent to a vacuum decanter. The organic condensate from the decanter is routed with crude Nitrobenzene to a three-step washing train, where most of impurities are removed. The water generated in wash step is treated with the aqueous condensate from decanter in a column and wasted. The product leaving the washing train is sent to a steam stripper to recover the excess benzene, which remains in solution with the Nitrobenzene up to this point in the process. Benzene stream is separated from water and recycled. Finally, the Nitrobenzene product is separated from water and sent to an aniline plant.
Vent Treatment. Vents generated along the process, after being combined, are sent to a scrubber, which uses a Nitrobenzene slip stream to recover any benzene present in the vent stream. The bottom product is recycled to washing train, while the overhead stream is sent to a packed bed unit to remove nitrogen oxides, forming nitric acid diluted solution, that is sent back to nitrator.
