Report Abstract
This report targets Weak Nitric Acid (65 wt%) production in the United States. Initially, ammonia is oxidized to nitric oxide. Then, nitric oxide is oxidized to form nitrogen dioxide, and absorbed at the same pressure by water producing 65 wt% Nitric Acid. The whole process examined in this study occurs at a high monopressure.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Nitric Acid production and related Nitric Acid production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Nitric Acid production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Nitric Acid plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Nitric Acid plant operating costs (Opex).
The Nitric Acid production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Nitric Acid plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Nitric Acid plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Oxidation; and (2) Absorption.
* Oxidation. Initially, liquid ammonia is evaporated, superheated and sent to an oxidation reactor. The superheated ammonia is mixed with compressed air and fed to the oxidation reactor, where it reacts with oxygen (from air) producing mainly nitrogen monoxide and water. The reaction takes place on platinum-rhodium catalyst gauzes, at temperatures between 920 to 940°C and pressures between 7 and 12 bar. The temperature is controlled by the removal of the heat generated in the exothermic reactions by means of high-pressure steam generation. The nitrogen monoxide stream leaving the reactor is passed through heat exchangers, in which it is cooled through heat integration with process streams. Most part of the nitrogen monoxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide as the gas is cooled before being sent to the absorption section.
* Absorption. The cooled stream is further cooled in a cooler-condenser and then sent to an absorption tower. The absorption tower is a sieve tray-type column in which oxidized gases (NO2) are absorbed in water, countercurrent, to form Nitric Acid. At the bottom of the tower, Nitric Acid with a concentration of 65 wt% is obtained and sent to a bleach column, where it is contacted with a countercurrent flow of air for the removal of dissolved NOx compounds. The Nitric Acid product obtained is then directed to OSBL storage. The gas leaving the top of the absorption tower, commonly known as tail gas, is heated and discharged to the atmosphere with a NOx (NO and NO2) concentration less than 150 ppmv.
