ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Nitric Acid. Nitric acid (HNO3) is a very strong acid and a powerful oxidizing agent. It is used in the production of several chemicals as an organic nitration agent. Examples are in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, synthetic fibers, fungicides, insecticides, and others. It is mostly used in the manufacturing of ammonium nitrate for the fertilizer sector. It is produced via the oxidation of ammonia.

Raw Materials

Chemicals.
Ammonia. Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most produced synthetic chemicals worldwide. The main application of this world class commodity is in nitrogen fertilizers, followed by the synthesis of nitric acid. It is also used, to a lesser extent, in several other applications such as pulping of wood and as ingredient in household cleaners and drugs. Ammonia is produced basically by the reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen, in a 1:3 stoichiometric ratio. Its production routes are related to the source of the hydrogen used, being steam reforming the main one.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/088-A.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) oxidation; and (2) absorption.

* Oxidation. Initially, liquid ammonia is evaporated, superheated and sent to an oxidation reactor. The superheated ammonia is mixed with compressed air and fed to the oxidation reactor, where ammonia reacts with oxygen (from air) producing mainly nitrogen monoxide and water. The reaction takes place on platinum-rhodium catalyst gauzes, at temperatures between 870 to 930°C and pressures between 4 and 6 bar. The temperature is controlled by the removal of the heat generated in the exothermic reactions by means of high-pressure steam generation. Nitrogen monoxide stream leaving the reactor is passed through heat exchangers, in which it is cooled through heat integrations by heating process streams. Most part of the nitrogen monoxide is oxidized to nitrogen dioxide as the gas is cooled before being sent to absorption section.

* Absorption. The cooled stream is further cooled in a cooler-condenser and then sent to an absorption tower. The absorption tower is a sieve tray-type column in which oxidized gases (NO2) are absorbed in water, countercurrent, to form Nitric Acid. At the bottom of the tower, Nitric Acid with a concentration of 65 wt% is obtained and sent to a bleach column, where it is contacted with a counter current flow of air for the removal of dissolved NOx compounds. The Nitric Acid product obtained is then directed to OSBL storage. The gas leaving the top of the absorption tower, commonly known as tail gas, is heated and sent to an NOx abatement unit. In the NOX abatement unit, the NOx (NO and NO2) present in the tail gas is removed to a concentration of less than 150 ppmv by selective reaction with ammonia over a vanadium pentoxide catalyst. The treated gas is discharged to the atmosphere.
