About Butane. Butane (a.k.a. Butanes) refers to a gaseous stream containing mainly isobutane and n-butane; the proportion varies with the source. It is mainly obtained as a by-product in petroleum refining or gasoline manufacture.
Chemical Formula. C4H10
Commercial Grades. technical grade (95 wt% minimum purity); pure grade (99 wt % minimum purity); and research grade (99.99 wt% minimum purity).
Uses. Butane is used in various organic synthesis, gasoline additives, and in hydrogen production. it is also used as synthetic rubber precursor; aerosol propellant; refrigerant; and industrial solvent.
- Liquefied petroleum gas (fractionation, coproduced with propane).
Derivatives. t-butyl hydroperoxide; gasoline, alkylate; and isobutylene.
