It is a fossil fuel that is extracted from underground mines and is used as a source of energy for electricity generation, as well as for industrial and residential heating. About Coal. <p><b>About Coal Prices.</b> Having a reliable source for the price of coal is crucial when assessing impacts of energy costs on industrial and electricity businesses, elaborating internal commercial production studies, or developing investment analyses. Because it is more affordable than other fuels, coal is widely used by developing countries and emerging economies, so knowing the price of coal with confidence is especially important when considering industrial endeavors in these markets.</p><p>Coal is a globally traded commodity, and its price is influenced by factors such as coal quality and grade, demand from emerging markets, competition from other fuels, environmental concerns, transportation costs and government regulations.</p><p>Coal had its period of greater relevance during the industrial revolution and, since then, has lost ground to natural gas and petroleum derivatives, despite still handling about a third of the world's energy generation. Price Dynamics. The Coal price in Brazil decreased during July 2018 to 143 USD per metric ton, which represents a slight decline of 2% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Coal prices in Brazil decreased significantly by 9%. Meanwhile, in Canada, the average price of Coal amounted to 168 USD per metric ton in July 2018, from 139 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the Coal price in Canada is 2% higher than the price one month before.

The price of Coal in Chile rose slightly throughout July 2018, reaching 102 USD per metric ton. The price in Chile is 2% higher than the average price in the previous month and 5% higher than the average price one year before. In contrast, Coal prices in Colombia increased significantly during July 2018, reaching 79 USD per metric ton, which means a rise of 7% from the previous month’s price and a rise of 0.7% from the previous year’s price. 

In the month examined, the Coal prices in Mexico experienced a significant decline of 8 USD per metric ton from the previous month's price, to 95 USD per metric ton. Such price movement in Mexico meant a decrease of 8% on a monthly basis and a rise of 2% on a yearly basis. On the other hand, in July 2018, the Coal price in United States witnessed a rise of 0.3 USD per metric ton when compared against the previous month's price, to 58 USD per metric ton. The July 2018 price in United States is 0.5% lower than the price one year before.
