Report Abstract
This study presents the economics of Phenol production from benzene and hydrogen peroxide in the United States using a process similar to the one proposed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In this process, benzene is directly oxidized with hydrogen peroxide to Phenol, using a vanadyl pyrophosphate catalyst.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Phenol production and related Phenol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Phenol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Phenol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Phenol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Phenol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Phenol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Phenol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Phenol. Phenol, also known as hydroxybenzene, is an aromatic compound, comprised of an aromatic ring attached to a hydroxyl group. The major route for phenol production is based on cumene oxidation. Phenol is mainly employed in the manufacturing of bisphenol A (BPA), phenolic resins, Caprolactam and analine.
Raw Materials
Benzene. Benzene (C6H6) is a flammable and volatile liquid. As the most simple aromatic hydrocarbon, it is used as an intermediate to produce many important chemicals, such as styrene (raw material for polystyrene and synthetic rubber), cyclohexane (used in nylon production), alkylbenzenes (used in detergent industry), aniline (used to produce dyes and polyurethanes), and chlorobenzenes. Also, benzene is used to produce pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, plastics, and pesticides. It occurs naturally in crude oil and coal tar.
Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide is the simplest peroxide, mainly used as a bleaching agent and as an oxidizing agent in the pulp and paper, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical, electronics, and textile industries. The scale of Hydrogen Peroxide manufacture and use has increased noticeably with the development of electrochemical processes in the beginning of 1900, and then, with the development of organic autoxidation processes in the 1950s.
