Report Abstract
This study analysis the economics of Anhydrous Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) production from hydrogen and chlorine in the United States. The process examined is a typical synthesis of Hydrogen Chloride via the direct reaction of the elements.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Hydrochloric Acid production and related Hydrochloric Acid production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Hydrochloric Acid production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Hydrochloric Acid plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Hydrochloric Acid plant operating costs (Opex).
The Hydrochloric Acid production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Hydrochloric Acid plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Hydrochloric Acid plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Hydrogen Chloride. Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), commonly found as hydrochloric acid (a.k.a. muriatic acid) when dissolved in water, is a highly important industrial chemical. Hydrochloric acid has widespread applications in various industries, with major uses in steel pickling, pH control, water treatment, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis. It is also employed in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, dyes, and in food processing. Hydrogen chloride is primarily produced through the direct synthesis of hydrogen and chlorine, or as a by-product of chlorination reactions in various organic processes. The HCl gas can be absorbed in water to produce aqueous hydrochloric acid, which is the form most widely used industrially.
Raw Materials
Hydrogen. The hydrogen molecule, H2, is the normal state of pure hydrogen, even though hydrogen can be found in its atomic form under specific conditions. It is a very stable molecule, not usually reactive under normal conditions. Essentially, molecular hydrogen is produced industrially by three different methods: hydrocarbons steam reforming, hydrocarbons partial oxidation and water electrolysis. Hydrogen can also be obtained as a by-product recovered in processes such as the manufacture of styrene from ethylbenzene.
Chlorine. Chlorine figures among the most important chemical commodities. It is an indispensable intermediate in the chemical industry, employed in the manufacture of a multitude of end products (e.g. materials of construction, solvents, pesticides, etc). Most of chlorine produced on commercial scale is based on electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride (brine), which also generates caustic soda and hydrogen as co-products (chlor-alkali processes).

Hydrogen Chloride Production from Polyvinyl Chloride Waste
This study approaches the economics of gaseous Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) production from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste in the United States. The process under analysis is a pyrolysis conducted in two continuous reactors. Initially, HCl and chlorinated hydrocarbons (Cl-HCs) are removed from the plastic in the first reactor and HCl is purified. The plastic is then sent to a second reactor to finish pyrolysis and, finally, the pyrolysis gases are directed to distillation to produce benzene and fuel oil as by-products
