Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Chloroprene production from acetylene and hydrogen chloride in the United States. In the process examined, acetylene is dimerized to monovinyl acetylene (MVA), which is then reacted with hydrogen chloride to generate a chloroallene intermediate. Finally the chloroallene is rearranged to Chloroprene.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Chloroprene production and related Chloroprene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Chloroprene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Chloroprene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Chloroprene plant operating costs (Opex).
The Chloroprene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Chloroprene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Chloroprene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Chloroprene. Chloroprene is a synthetic monomer used in the production of neoprene rubber, known for its resistance to heat, oil, and chemicals. Neoprene is widely used in the automotive and construction industries for seals, hoses, and insulation. Chloroprene is produced via the chlorination of butadiene and is stored as a liquid. Its polymerization yields neoprene rubber, which is prized for its durability and versatility in a range of harsh environments.
Raw Materials
Acetylene. Acetylene (also known as ethyne) is the simplest alkyne and a very important commercial compound. It has several applications in the processing of metals, as well as in the manufacture of chemical compounds, such as vinyl chloride and 1,4-butanediol. This chemical is produced on commercial scale mainly from partial combustion of methane or as a side product in the ethylene stream from cracking of hydrocarbons.
Hydrogen Chloride. Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), commonly found as hydrochloric acid (a.k.a. muriatic acid) when dissolved in water, is a highly important industrial chemical. Hydrochloric acid has widespread applications in various industries, with major uses in steel pickling, pH control, water treatment, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis. It is also employed in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, dyes, and in food processing. Hydrogen chloride is primarily produced through the direct synthesis of hydrogen and chlorine, or as a by-product of chlorination reactions in various organic processes. The HCl gas can be absorbed in water to produce aqueous hydrochloric acid, which is the form most widely used industrially.

Other Chloroprene Production Cost Reports
Chloroprene Production from Butadiene
This report analyses the economics of Chloroprene production from butadiene and chlorine in the United States, via a typical vapor phase butadiene chlorination process. Initially, butadiene is first chlorinated producing two isomers, 1,4-dichloro-2-butene and 3,4-dichloro-1-butene. Then, 1,4-isomers are isomerized to 3,4 isomer. This chemical is finally dehydrochlorinated in the presence of caustic soda producing chloroprene.
