Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Methyl Chloride production from methanol and hydrogen chloride. The economic analysis encompasses a plant located in the United States using a conventional industrial process where chloridric acid is combined with methanol in a reaction occurring in vapor phase over a catalyst bed.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Chloromethane production and related Chloromethane production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Chloromethane production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Chloromethane plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Chloromethane plant operating costs (Opex).
The Chloromethane production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Chloromethane plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Chloromethane plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic
The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) hydrochlorination reaction; (2) water and HCl removal; and (3) purification.
* Hydrochlorination reaction. Initially, methanol and anhydrous hydrogen chloride are combined in vapor phase and passed together over a catalyst bed of gamma-alumina, yielding Methyl Chloride.
* Water and HCl removal. Reactor vapor outlet is quenched with a recycled hydrochloric acid stream and subsequently with caustic soda, what leads to the condensation of water byproduct from the reaction and excess hydrogen chloride.
* Purification. The gaseous crude Methyl Chloride is then fed to a column along with sulfuric acid, for the removal of dimethyl ether and residual water. Finally, the dry Methyl Chloride is purified from heavy ends in a distillation column, operating under high pressures.
