About Oxygen. Oxygen (a.k.a. O2) is a nonmetallic element and one of the most abundant elements on Earth’s surface, accounting for approximately 23 wt% of the atmosphere, 86 wt% of seawater, and 47 wt% of the Earth’s crust. Under standard conditions, Oxygen is a diatomic gas with molecular formula O2. It is a very important oxidizing agent that forms oxides with most elements.
Oxygen is produced on commercial scale by cryogenic distillation in air separation plants, in which basically the air is cleaned, dried, compressed, refrigerated until partial liquefaction and then distilled into nitrogen, oxygen and argon. Both gaseous and liquid Oxygen are produced through such processes, at about 99.5 wt% purity. Gaseous Oxygen is also commercially produced from air by vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) processes, at purities ranging from 90 – 93 wt%.
Despite being nonflammable, Oxygen must be stored at minimal distances from exposures, in order to avoid interactions with persons and/or flammable substances since it vigorously accelerates combustion. It is usually stored as a compressed gas in high-pressure cylinders or tube trailers. Oxygen may also be stored in the liquid form for larger needs, in cryogenic tank trailers limited to volumes in order of 4000 m³. Because of the expense of the containers required, it cannot be stored in more than modest amounts nor can it be shipped profitably more than a few hundred kilometers. Most of oxygen that is produced is distributed by pipeline. It can be also transported by cryogenic tank trailers, railroad car or aircraft (only compressed).
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Oxygen are listed below.

- Water (electrolysis; coproduced with hydrogen),
- Air (cryogenic separation; coproduced with nitrogen)
The uses and applications of Oxygen may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Oxygen are vacuum swing adsorption grade (90 to 93% minimum purity) and cryogenic distillation grade (99.5% minimum purity).
Oxygen is widely used in a range of industries, in different applications. In steelmaking, it is used in oxidation of contaminants (e.g. carbon, phosphorus, and silicon). In pulp and paper industry, Oxygen is used to produce lime (to prepare or reconstitute white liquor). In medicine, it is used in the maintenance of arterial blood oxygen.
