Report Abstract
is study comprises a techno-economic analysis of an industrial process for Titanium Tetrachloride production from synthetic rutile in a United States-based facility. In this process, synthetic rutile is chlorinated in a fluid-bed reactor. Subsequently, the product from reaction is condensed and purified to produce Titanium Tetrachloride.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Titanium Tetrachloride production and related Titanium Tetrachloride production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Titanium Tetrachloride production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Titanium Tetrachloride plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Titanium Tetrachloride plant operating costs (Opex).
The Titanium Tetrachloride production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Titanium Tetrachloride plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Titanium Tetrachloride plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Titanium Tetrachloride. Titanium tetrachloride is a chemical intermediate used in producing titanium metal and titanium dioxide pigments. It also serves in creating smoke screens and as a catalyst in organic synthesis. Produced by chlorinating titanium-containing ores, it is stored as a volatile liquid under moisture-free conditions. Its conversion to titanium dioxide provides pigments with high opacity and brightness for paints and coatings.
Raw Materials
Synthetic Rutile. Rutile is a natural form of Titanium Dioxide. It is a common mineral found in high-temperature and high-pressure rocks. Since only a small number of rutile deposits can be mined economically many different processes have been developed to purify ilmenite (a mineral that contains titanium dioxide and greater amounts of iron impurities) through the reduction of Fe3+ with carbon or hydrogen. The resulting material is called synthetic rutile and contains 90-96 wt% Titanium Dioxide - much more than the 44-65 wt% Titanium Dioxide found in ilmenite.
Hydrochloric Acid. Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), commonly found as hydrochloric acid (a.k.a. muriatic acid) when dissolved in water, is a highly important industrial chemical. Hydrochloric acid has widespread applications in various industries, with major uses in steel pickling, pH control, water treatment, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis. It is also employed in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, dyes, and in food processing. Hydrogen chloride is primarily produced through the direct synthesis of hydrogen and chlorine, or as a by-product of chlorination reactions in various organic processes. The HCl gas can be absorbed in water to produce aqueous hydrochloric acid, which is the form most widely used industrially.

Titanium Butoxide Production
This report presents the economics of a typical Titanium Butoxide production process from butyl alcohol, titanium tetrachloride, and ammonia in the United States. In this reaction, titanium tetrachloride is added to the butyl alcohol, yielding titanium butoxide and hydrochloric acid, which is then neutralized with ammonia to generate ammonium chloride.

Synthetic Rutile Production from Ilmenite (Benelite Process)
This study comprises a techno-economic analysis of an industrial process for Synthetic Rutile production from ilmenite in a United States-based facility. In this process, ilmenite is reduced to transform trivalent iron into the divalent form, then the reduced iron is leached with acid, producing Synthetic Rutile.

Synthetic Rutile Production from Leucoxene (Becher Process)
This report analyses the economics of Synthetic Rutile production from leucoxene in a United States-based facility. In this process, ilmenite is oxidized forming iron(III) oxide. Subsequently, the iron(III) oxide is reduced to its metalic form, which is then separated from the product by aeration and leaching with acid, resulting in Synthetic Rutile.
