Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Sodium Chlorite production from sodium chlorate, sodium hydroxide, and hydrogen peroxide. Initially, chlorine dioxide gas is obtained from sodium chlorate via a sulfuric acid-based reduction with sulfur dioxide as reduction agent. Then, this gas is absorbed into a solution of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide, yielding sodium chlorite. The economic analysis is based on a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Sodium Chlorite production and related Sodium Chlorite production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Sodium Chlorite production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Sodium Chlorite plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Sodium Chlorite plant operating costs (Opex).
The Sodium Chlorite production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Sodium Chlorite plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Sodium Chlorite plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Sodium Chlorite. Sodium Chlorite is a chemical compound used in the manufacturing of paper and as a disinfectant. Sodium chlorite is derived indirectly from sodium chlorate, NaClO3. First, sodium chlorate is reduced to chlorine dioxide, typically in a strong acid solution using reducing agents such as sodium sulfite, sulfur dioxide, or hydrochloric acid. This intermediate is then absorbed into a solution of aqueous sodium hydroxide where another reducing agent converts it to sodium chlorite.
Raw Materials
Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.
Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen Peroxide is the simplest peroxide, mainly used as a bleaching agent and as an oxidizing agent in the pulp and paper, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, chemical, electronics, and textile industries. The scale of Hydrogen Peroxide manufacture and use has increased noticeably with the development of electrochemical processes in the beginning of 1900, and then, with the development of organic autoxidation processes in the 1950s.
Sodium Chlorate. Sodium Chlorate is an oxidizing agent used in the production of chlorine dioxide for bleaching paper pulp and in herbicides. It is valued for its strong oxidizing properties and efficiency in industrial applications. Sodium chlorate is produced through the electrolysis of sodium chloride solution and stored as a crystalline solid.
