12 kta United States-based plant | Q3 2024 | 107 pages |
This report presents a cost analysis of a 12 kta (kilo metric ton per annum) United States-based plant. You can add a customized cost analysis, assuming another location (country), when ordering a premium edition of this report.
Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Potassium Iodide production from potassium hydroxide, iodine, and coke in the United States. In this process, iodine is absorbed in potassium hydroxide, yielding Potassium Iodide. Potassium iodate is also generated as by-product.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Potassium Iodide production and related Potassium Iodide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Potassium Iodide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Potassium Iodide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Potassium Iodide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Potassium Iodide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Potassium Iodide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Potassium Iodide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Potassium Iodide. Potassium Iodide is an odorless, white inorganic salt and the most commercially significant iodide compound, medicinally used for thyroid blockade, thyroid storm, and as an expectorant. For these reasons, it is one of the most important medications needed in a basic health system.
Raw Materials
Iodine. Iodine is an essential element used in pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, and as a contrast agent in medical imaging. Its antiseptic properties and role in thyroid health make it vital in both health and industry. Iodine is extracted from brine solutions or seaweed and is stored as a solid or in solution. It is highly valued for its role in healthcare and chemical manufacturing.
Potassium Hydroxide. Potassium Hydroxide is a strong base used in the production of biodiesel, soaps, and as a pH regulator in various industries. Its caustic properties make it essential in manufacturing and chemical processing. Potassium hydroxide is produced via the electrolysis of potassium chloride and is stored as solid flakes or in solution. It is widely used in industries requiring strong alkaline agents.
Coke. Coke is a carbon-rich solid used as a reducing agent in steelmaking and as a fuel in blast furnaces. It also finds applications in the production of chemicals such as calcium carbide. Coke is produced by heating coal in the absence of oxygen, a process known as coking. Its high carbon content and structural strength are essential for sustaining high-temperature reactions in metallurgical processes.
