Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical Barium Chloride production process from baryte, calcium chloride, and coke in the United States. In this process, baryte reacts directly with coke and calcium chloride, forming barium chloride.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Barium Chloride production and related Barium Chloride production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Barium Chloride production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Barium Chloride plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Barium Chloride plant operating costs (Opex).
The Barium Chloride production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Barium Chloride plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Barium Chloride plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Barium Chloride. Barium Chloride is one of the most common water-soluble salts of barium, appearing as colorless to white crystals or colorless monoclinic plates. On an industrial scale, the production of barium chloride is carried out by the reaction of barium sulfide solution with hydrochloric acid. Alternatively, the reaction of barium sulfide solution with chlorine is of commercial interest. Along with other chlorides, Barium Chloride is used as a component of melt quenching baths for steel. It is also employed as a starting material for the production of sulfide-free blanc fixe grades and, instead of barium carbonate, to remove sulfate from solutions. Finally, it has limited importance as a stabilizer for plastics.
Raw Materials
Calcium Chloride. Calcium Chloride is a highly soluble salt used for de-icing, dust control, and in the food industry. It is valued for its ability to absorb moisture and reduce the freezing point of water, making it useful in cold climates. Calcium chloride is produced by the neutralization of hydrochloric acid with calcium carbonate. It is stored in solid or liquid form and is easy to transport for use in various industrial and environmental applications.
Coke. Coke is a carbon-rich solid used as a reducing agent in steelmaking and as a fuel in blast furnaces. It also finds applications in the production of chemicals such as calcium carbide. Coke is produced by heating coal in the absence of oxygen, a process known as coking. Its high carbon content and structural strength are essential for sustaining high-temperature reactions in metallurgical processes.
Baryte. Baryte is a mineral consisting of barium sulfate, used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids for oil and gas exploration. It increases fluid density, preventing blowouts. Mined from barite deposits, it is stored as a powder or aggregate. Additionally, it is used in producing paints, plastics, and rubber to improve properties like weight and sound reduction.
