Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical Phenethyl Alcohol production process from benzene, ethylene oxide, and aluminum chloride in the United States via a Friedel-Crafts reaction. In the process, benzene and ethylene oxide reacts in the presence of Aluminum trichloride, producing an addition product, which is hydrolyzed to the Phenethyl Alcohol.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Phenethyl Alcohol production and related Phenethyl Alcohol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Phenethyl Alcohol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Phenethyl Alcohol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Phenethyl Alcohol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Phenethyl Alcohol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Phenethyl Alcohol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Phenethyl Alcohol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Phenethyl Alcohol. Phenethyl Alcohol (a.k.a. Phenylethanol) is is a primary alcohol that is ethanol substituted by a phenyl group at position 2. It appears as a colourless liquid, slightly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. Phenetyl Alcohol is widely found in nature in a variety of essential oils and is used in the manufacture of synthetic rose perfumes and in the synthesis of rose oils. It is also used as a flavoring agent and as a perfumery chemical in cosmetic formulations as detergents, soaps, etc.
Raw Materials
Benzene. Benzene (C6H6) is a flammable and volatile liquid. As the most simple aromatic hydrocarbon, it is used as an intermediate to produce many important chemicals, such as styrene (raw material for polystyrene and synthetic rubber), cyclohexane (used in nylon production), alkylbenzenes (used in detergent industry), aniline (used to produce dyes and polyurethanes), and chlorobenzenes. Also, benzene is used to produce pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, plastics, and pesticides. It occurs naturally in crude oil and coal tar.
Ethylene Oxide. Ethylene Oxide (also known as Oxirane and Epoxyethane) is the simplest cyclic ether. Very reactive, Ethylene Oxide is one of the most versatile chemical intermediates, converted in a range of products, and also used as disinfectant, sterilizing agent, and fumigant. Currently, Ethylene Oxide is produced primarily by direct oxidation processes, based on the catalytic oxidation of ethylene with oxygen over a silver-based catalyst.

Benzene Production from Pygas (Extractive Distillation Process)
This report examines the costs related to Benzene production from pyrolysis gasoline (pygas) in the United States using a typical extractive distillation process. Initially, pygas is fractionated into 3 hydrocarbon cuts. The C6s fraction is then fed to an extractive distillation system, using N-formylmorpholine (NFM) as solvent. to recover benzene.
