This report presents an up-to-date, detailed cost analysis of Pentaerythritol (PER) production from acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. The process examined is a typical industrial process. In this plant, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde are reacted to PER via aldol addition, producing pentaerythrose intermediate, which is reduced in alkaline medium to Pentaerythritol. The reactor product solution is sent to an evaporator and a trayed column for unconverted formaldehyde removal and concentration of the solution. The concentrated solution is then crystallized, dried and sent to storage.
