ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Methyl Acrylate. Methyl acrylate, the methyl ester of acrylic acid, is an acrylic ester mainly used for manufacturing homopolymers and copolymers and as feedstock for chemical syntheses, since it undergoes addition reactions with several organic and inorganic compounds. On a commercial scale, methyl acrylate is produced primarily by the esterification with methanol under acid catalysis. The main applications of this chemical include the production of coatings, elastomers, adhesives, thickeners, amphoteric surfactants, fibers, plastics, textiles and inks, and in chemical synthesis. Methyl acrylate is stored under air to prevent polymerization – the presence of oxygen is required for stabilizers to function effectively.

Raw Materials

Methanol. Methanol is one of the most important chemical raw materials, used as a solvent, starting material in the production of chemicals and in the fuel sector. Currently, more than 95% of commercial methanol is synthetically produced from synthesis gas, or syngas, which is a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Chemicals.
Acrylic Acid. Acrylic acid, ester grade is a vital intermediate in the production of acrylate esters, which are widely used in adhesives, coatings, and textiles. Its reactivity enables it to form polymers that are valuable for water-based paints, adhesives, and textiles. Ester grade acrylic acid is typically produced through the oxidation of propylene. It is stored as a liquid and supplied to manufacturers who use it to create a range of acrylate-based products, driving demand across multiple industries.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/026-A.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process examined comprises two main sections: (1) esterification, and (2) purification.

Esterification. Acrylic acid is initially reacted with methanol to produce Methyl Acrylate. Such esterification reaction is carried out in a fixed bed reactor, packed with an ion-exchange resin used as strong acid catalyst. The reactions occur in the liquid phase, and a small excess of methanol is used to improve reaction kinetics and shift the reaction toward the ester formation.

Purification. After the esterification, acrylic acid and heavy by-products formed by the reaction are separated from the esterification product and recycled. The unreacted methanol is also extracted from the crude ester, distilled, and recycled. A final distillation removes the impurities from the product, yielding 99.5% pure Methyl Acrylate.

ICC - Short Description: This report presents the economics of Methyl Acrylate production from acrylic acid and methanol in the United States, via a direct esterification process similar to the Synthomer process. The esterification is conducted in a fixed bed reactor, packed with an ion-exchange resin that is used as strong acid catalyst.
