ICC - Process Overview Text: <h6>Product</h6> <p><b>Itaconic Acid</b>. Itaconic acid (also known as methylenesuccinic acid) is an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid that can be applied in the production of unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), as well as in the manufacture of surfactants, insecticides, and lubricants. Initially produced by distillation of citric acid, this dicarboxylic acid is produced nowadays, on an industrial scale, by the fermentation of carbohydrates such as glucose or molasses, being considered a versatile building block for renewable polyesters.</p> <h6>Raw Materials</h6> <p><b>Formalin</b>. Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas remarkably versatile as a chemical intermediate - it is widely used for the production of resins and coatings employed in the manufacture of building materials and household products. Since the pure gas slowly polymerizes at temperatures lower than 80°C, formaldehyde is usually available as a liquid solution in water with small amounts of methanol. This solution is called formalin. Most of world's formalin is commercially manufactured from methanol and air in the presence of a silver (or a metal oxide) catalyst.</p> <b>Dimethyl Succinate</b>. Dimethyl succinate is an ester of succinic acid used as a solvent, plasticizer, and intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, resins, and biodegradable plastics. It provides a green alternative in eco-friendly formulations. Produced by esterifying succinic acid with methanol, it is stored as a liquid. Its biodegradable nature and low toxicity make it suitable for sustainable industrial processes.</p>
