Report Abstract
This study approaches the economics of Isoprene production from a crude C5s stream in the United States using a two-step extractive distillation process similar to BASF N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) process.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Isoprene production and related Isoprene production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Isoprene production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Isoprene plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Isoprene plant operating costs (Opex).
The Isoprene production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Isoprene plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Isoprene plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Isoprene. Isoprene is a volatile liquid hydrocarbon used in the production of synthetic rubber, especially for tires and other automotive components. It provides elasticity and durability to rubber materials. Isoprene is produced through the thermal cracking of petroleum or as a byproduct of naphtha refining. It is stored as a liquid and remains essential to industries requiring high-performance synthetic rubber.
Raw Material
Crude C5s. Crude C5s are a byproduct of naphtha cracking, consisting of a mixture of C5 hydrocarbons. They serve as feedstocks for the production of synthetic rubbers, resins, and adhesives. Crude C5s are separated through distillation and refining processes and are stored as liquids. They play a significant role in the chemical industry, especially in the production of high-performance elastomers.
