Report Abstract
This report presents an economic study of Isononanol production from octenes in the presence of a rhodium catalyst. It assumes a plant located in the United States using a process similar to Johnson Matthey OXO alcohols process. Initially, octenes are submitted to hydroformylation to form the respectives C9 aldehydes. The aldehydes are then hydrogenated to the corresponding C9 alcohols.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Isononanol production and related Isononanol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Isononanol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Isononanol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Isononanol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Isononanol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Isononanol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Isononanol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic

The process under analysis comprises three major sections: (1) Hydroformylation; (2) Hydrogenation; and (3) Purification.
Hydroformylation. The Hydroformylation is comprised of a series of four water cooled reactors. The first reactor receives mixed octenes from the Feed Tank and rhodium catalyst in form of salt, as well as fresh or recycled pressurized synthesis gas. The effluent of one reactor is cooled down in heat exchangers before being routed to the subsequent reactor, which is also fed with synthesis gas. The octenes react with the carbon monoxide and hydrogen contained in the synthesis gas to form the corresponding aldehydes with chain length of 9 carbons.
Hydrogenation. The crude product flows to an intermediate vessel, where pressure is reduced and hydrogen and carbon monoxide dissolved in the liquid phase are released. The reaction product is passed through a series of ion exchange resin beds that absorb the rhodium contained in this stream. Then, the spent rhodium salt proceeds to be recovered for the hydroformylation reaction to keep the process economically feasible. The rhodium-free aldehyde-olefin mixture is mixed with pressurized hydrogen. The aldehydes are catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of a copper/zinc catalyst to form the isononyl alcohols with high selectivity.
Purification. The crude alcohol stream formed is sent to three columns for purification. Light and heavy ends are used as fuel, and aldehydes are recycled to hydrogenation. Finally, the alcohol stream is still passed through a hydrorefining step in the presence of hydrogen and a nickel based catalyst. This step serves to remove trace levels of unsaturation, as well as convert any remaining aldehyde into the corresponding alcohol.
