ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Caprolactam. Caprolactam is the key raw material used in the production of nylon 6 fibers and resins, essential in textiles, carpets, and engineering plastics. Its high tensile strength and durability make it invaluable in automotive and industrial applications. Caprolactam is produced via the cyclohexanone oxime process. It is stored as solid flakes or granules and remains in high demand due to the growing global need for synthetic fibers and resins.

Raw Materials

Butadiene. Butadiene is a commodity mainly produced as a byproduct of ethylene crackers. More specifically, it is extracted from the C4 hydrocarbons stream in naphtha-based crackers. The largest single use of butadiene is in the production of SBR and styrene-butadiene latexes.
Hydrogen Cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide is a volatile, flammable and highly toxic gas in temperatures above 25 ºC. Otherwise, it is a dangerous transparent liquid; its storage and transport are prohibited in certain locations. HCN’s range of applications includes its use as an intermediate in the production of sodium or potassium cyanide. It may also be used as a disinfectant for plague-infected ships and houses. HCN is obtained in industrial plants by the endothermic reaction between ammonia and natural gas (methane) using a platinum-rhodium catalyst. Such plants are necessarily integrated to consumer facilities.

Other Caprolactam Production Cost Reports

Caprolactam from Cyclohexane (Photonitrozation Process)

This report concerns the production of Caprolactam from cyclohexane in the United States. This report reviews a cyclohexane photonitrozation process (PNC). Initially, cyclohexane is submitted to PNC with nitrosyl chloride. The oxime produced is then subjected to Beckmann rearrangement and Caprolactam is formed.

Details: 180 kta United States-based plant | Q3 2024 | 107 pages | Issue F From $1,499 USD

The cost analyses presented in this report target a 180 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.

Caprolactam Production from Toluene

This study reviews the economics of a process for Caprolactam production from toluene. Initially, toluene is oxidized to benzoic acid, which is then hydrogenated to hexahydrobenzoic acid. The hexahydrobenzoic acid is reacted with nitrosyl sulfuric acid and oleum for caprolactam production. The economic analysis performed is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
