Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical Azodicarbonamide production process from urea, hydrazine hydrate, and sodium dichromate in the United States. In the process examined, urea and hydrazine hydrate react to produce hydrazocarbonamide, which is oxidized to produce Azodicarbonamide.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Azodicarbonamide production and related Azodicarbonamide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Azodicarbonamide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Azodicarbonamide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Azodicarbonamide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Azodicarbonamide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Azodicarbonamide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Azodicarbonamide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Azodicarbonamide. Azodicarbonamide is a chemical compound used as a food additive (flour bleaching agent and a dough conditioner), and in the production of foamed plastics as a blowing agent. Azodicarbonamide is produced from hydrazine and urea. These reagents form the intermediate hydrazodicarbonamide, which is then oxidized to Azodicarbonamide. It appears as an orange to pale-yellow, crystalline powder, poorly soluble in water at 20 °C, although it is slightly soluble in hot water. It is insoluble in many organic solvents, but is soluble in N,N-dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulfoxide.
Raw Materials
Urea. Urea is a nitrogen-rich fertilizer essential for modern agriculture. It is also used in the production of plastics, resins, and pharmaceuticals. Urea is synthesized from ammonia and carbon dioxide and is typically stored in solid granules or liquid form. Its widespread use in farming helps boost crop yields worldwide.
Hydrazine. Hydrazine is a highly reactive compound used as a rocket propellant, in fuel cells, and as a reducing agent in water treatment. It is critical for applications requiring high-energy density materials. Produced by the Olin Raschig process, it is stored as a solution due to its instability in pure form. Its ability to scavenge oxygen makes it useful in preventing corrosion in boilers and pipelines.

Granulated Urea Production from Ammonia (Self-Stripping Process)
This study approaches the economics of Granulated Urea production from ammonia and carbon dioxide in the United States through Saipem's (formerly Snamprogetti) ammonia stripping technology. In this process, ammonia and carbon dioxide are converted to Urea via ammonium carbamate intermediate. The non-converted carbamate is stripped from the Urea solution by excess ammonia and decomposed back to ammonia and carbon dioxide, which are recycled to the Urea synthesis.
