Hydrochloric Acid from Sodium Chloride (Sodium Hydroxide as Co-Product)

Hydrochloric Acid Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs

170 kta United States-based plant | 107 Pages | Issue G | Q3 2024
Starting at $1,199 USD | See Report Editions Prices

This report presents the economics of Hydrochloric Acid production via an integrated plant comprising: 1) a typical chlor-alkali electrolysis process using membrane cells; and 2) the production of Hydrochloric Acid from hydrogen and chlorine. A 35 wt% Hydrochloric Acid solution is obtained as the final product and 50 wt% caustic soda is obtained as co-product in this process. The analysis is based on plant located in the United States.

The report provides a comprehensive study of Hydrochloric Acid production and related Hydrochloric Acid production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Hydrochloric Acid production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Hydrochloric Acid plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Hydrochloric Acid plant operating costs (Opex).

The Hydrochloric Acid production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Hydrochloric Acid plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Hydrochloric Acid plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

Hydrochloric Acid Production Cost Report Process Overview
Products

Hydrochloric Acid. Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), commonly found as hydrochloric acid (a.k.a. muriatic acid) when dissolved in water, is a highly important industrial chemical. Hydrochloric acid has widespread applications in various industries, with major uses in steel pickling, pH control, water treatment, and as a catalyst in chemical synthesis. It is also employed in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, dyes, and in food processing. Hydrogen chloride is primarily produced through the direct synthesis of hydrogen and chlorine, or as a by-product of chlorination reactions in various organic processes. The HCl gas can be absorbed in water to produce aqueous hydrochloric acid, which is the form most widely used industrially.

Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.

Raw Material

Sodium Chloride. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the salt naturally occurring in sea water. Sodium chloride (as aqueous solution, i.e., brine or solid) is widely used in the chemical industry as a feedstock for the production of chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and other sodium-based compounds through electrolysis.
