Hydrogen (a.k.a. H2), the lightest of all gases, is an important chemical feedstock, that undergoes many reactions, forming compounds with almost all elements. Since H2 is an energy carrier, it has been considered for stationary power and transportation applications. Hydrogen production technologies are separated into three main categories: thermal, electrolytic and photolytic. In thermal processes, such as reforming and gasification, H2 is produced from biomass and fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gas. In electrolytic processes, H2 is obtained from water-splitting, using electricity that can be generated from a variety of sources, such as wind. In photolytic processes, light energy allows Hydrogen production using novel photoelectrochemical and photobiological water-splitting processes. Nowadays, most of Hydrogen commercial production is based on steam reforming, partial oxidation (coal, coke, hydrocarbons), or electrolysis of water. This chemical is also produced as a by-product of eletrochemical processes and production of gasoline and chemicals such as ethylene, styrene and MTBE.

About Hydrogen. Hydrogen, an incredibly versatile and abundant element, plays a paramount role within process industries owing to its multifaceted applications and its potential as a clean energy carrier. Its production involves various methods, such as steam methane reforming, electrolysis, and partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, each offering unique advantages and applications.

Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) remains a prevalent method, combining natural gas with high-temperature steam to yield hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Electrolysis, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen via electricity, comes in different forms like alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis. Partial Oxidation, another method, involves controlled combustion of hydrocarbons to generate hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

In the context of process industries:

  • Refineries: Hydrogen is instrumental in the refining process, used for hydrocracking and hydrotreating to eliminate impurities and convert heavy crude oil into more valuable products like gasoline and diesel.
  • Ammonia Production: The synthesis of ammonia through the Haber process is heavily reliant on hydrogen, as it's combined with nitrogen to create ammonia, a crucial component in the production of fertilizers and various industrial chemicals.
  • Methanol Production: Hydrogen serves as a key component in the manufacture of methanol, which acts as a fundamental building block for an array of chemicals and fuels.
  • Hydrogenation: In numerous industrial processes, hydrogenation is pivotal. This chemical reaction involves the addition of hydrogen to unsaturated compounds, supporting the production of various products, including the creation of margarine from vegetable oils and the hardening of fats.
  • Steel Industry: Hydrogen displays potential in the steel industry, potentially substituting coal in the direct reduction of iron ores. This substitution could significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with the steel production process.
  • Fuel Cells: Although not exclusive to process industries, hydrogen fuel cells provide a clean and sustainable energy solution. They power various operations within these industries, offering efficient and environmentally friendly energy alternatives.

Hydrogen's significance lies in its ability to serve as a feedstock, energy carrier, and chemical reagent. Its clean-burning properties position it as an attractive candidate in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. Industries are progressively exploring the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy sources to mitigate carbon emissions and minimize environmental impact. This growing demand for hydrogen as a green energy carrier is steering research towards more efficient production methods and distribution systems.

In summary, hydrogen stands as a linchpin in the evolution of process industries due to its versatility and the emergence of green production methods, promising a shift towards more sustainable and eco-friendly industrial practices. As technological advancements continue, the potential for hydrogen to revolutionize industrial landscapes by reducing carbon footprints and enabling cleaner processes becomes increasingly promising.
