Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Tricalcium Phosphate (TCP) from phosphate rock, phosphoric acid, and soda ash in the United States, via a typical calcination process. In the process examined, phosphate rock is mixed with soda ash and sent to grinding and pelletization. Phosphoric acid is added and the product is calcinated, producing TCP.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Tricalcium Phosphate production and related Tricalcium Phosphate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Tricalcium Phosphate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Tricalcium Phosphate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Tricalcium Phosphate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Tricalcium Phosphate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Tricalcium Phosphate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Tricalcium Phosphate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Tricalcium Phosphate. Tricalcium Phosphate (a.k.a. TCP, Tribasic Calcium Phosphate, Bone Phosphate of Lime) is a calcium salt of phosphoric acid. It appears as a white crystalline powder, insoluble in water and organic solvents, but soluble in hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. TCP is produced commercially by treating hydroxyapatite with phosphoric acid and slaked lime, or heating a mixture of a calcium pyrophosphate and calcium carbonate. TCP is used in powdered spices as an anticaking agent, in baby powder, and as a nutritional supplement.
Raw Materials
Soda Ash. Sodium Carbonate, also known as soda ash, is the disodium salt of carbonic acid. This chemical can be obtained from natural deposits as well as synthetically produced (through the Solvay process). Soda ash is widely used in production of glass, chemicals, soaps, detergents, pulp and paper.
Phosphoric Acid. Phosphoric acid is a widely used industrial acid in the production of fertilizers, detergents, and food additives. Its acidity and ability to release phosphate make it crucial in agriculture and manufacturing. Phosphoric acid is produced by treating phosphate rock with sulfuric acid and is stored as a liquid.
Rock Phosphate. Rock phosphate is a naturally occurring mineral used primarily as a raw material in the production of phosphoric acid and fertilizers. It is also used in animal feed supplements and industrial chemicals. Rock phosphate is mined from deposits and is stored as a solid. Its phosphate content is essential for plant growth, making it crucial for global agricultural production and soil health management.
