Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) production from bisphenol A (BPA) and bromine. In this process, TBBPA is generated by the bromination reaction of bisphenol A. The economic analysis approaches a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of TBBPA production and related TBBPA production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the TBBPA production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related TBBPA plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective TBBPA plant operating costs (Opex).
The TBBPA production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The TBBPA plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The TBBPA plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
TBBPA. TBBPA (a.k.a. Tetrabromobisphenol A) is a brominated compound with excellent flame retardant properties. It is produced by the bromination of bisphenol A, generally conducted in solvents, such as a halocarbon, a halocarbon and water, a halocarbon and 50% hydrobromic acid, or aqueous alkyl monoethers. TBBPA is mainly used to prepare fire-resistant polycarbonates. It has two hydroxyl groups, which can be reacted with epichlorohydrin under basic conditions to form diglycidyl ether, a compound widely used in epoxy resin formulations.
Raw Materials
BPA. Bisphenol A is a high volume production organic compound, synthesized from phenol and acetone. It has been produced in commercial since the 1950's and is mostly used in the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Nowadays its use in products with contact with food has been decreasing, mostly in the United States, due to a rising concern on the negative health effects it might cause.
Bromine. Bromine is a halogen element used in flame retardants, water treatment chemicals, and in the production of brominated organic compounds. Its high reactivity and ability to form a wide range of compounds make it indispensable in chemical industries. Bromine is extracted from brine pools and stored as a reddish-brown liquid. In addition to industrial applications, it is crucial in the synthesis of agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals due to its ability to selectively bond with organic molecules.
