Report Abstract
This report provides a techno-economic analysis of Sodium Cyanide production from hydrogen cyanide and caustic soda. In this process, hydrogen cyanide and sodium hydroxide solution react and water is evaporated. Solid Sodium Cyanide is obtained as the final product. The economic analysis provided assumes a plant located in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Sodium Cyanide production and related Sodium Cyanide production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Sodium Cyanide production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Sodium Cyanide plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Sodium Cyanide plant operating costs (Opex).
The Sodium Cyanide production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Sodium Cyanide plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Sodium Cyanide plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Sodium Cyanide. Sodium Cyanide (a.k.a. NaCN) is an inorganic salt, extremely toxic to humans, due to its binding with the Fe3+ ion in the hemoglobin, disabling the use of oxygen by the cells. It is a white cubic crystalline solid also known as white cyanide and has been the metal cyanide with the greatest commercial importance. This salt has a role as an inhibitor of many metabolic processes and is used as a test reagent for the function of chemoreceptors.
Raw Materials
Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.
Hydrogen Cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide is a volatile, flammable and highly toxic gas in temperatures above 25 ºC. Otherwise, it is a dangerous transparent liquid; its storage and transport are prohibited in certain locations. HCN’s range of applications includes its use as an intermediate in the production of sodium or potassium cyanide. It may also be used as a disinfectant for plague-infected ships and houses. HCN is obtained in industrial plants by the endothermic reaction between ammonia and natural gas (methane) using a platinum-rhodium catalyst. Such plants are necessarily integrated to consumer facilities.
