Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of the production of 1,3-Propanediol (PDO) production from crude glycerol using a fermentation process in the United States. The microorganism used is Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Propanediol production and related Propanediol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Propanediol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Propanediol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Propanediol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Propanediol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Propanediol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Propanediol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Propanediol. Propanediol is an important industrial chemical used in the manufacture of polymers, cosmetics, and personal care products. It serves as a solvent, humectant, and antifreeze agent, offering versatility in various applications. Propanediol can be produced via petrochemical routes or biobased fermentation processes. It is stored and transported as a liquid and is gaining popularity due to its eco-friendly profile in sustainable product formulations.
Raw Material
Glycerol. Crude glycerol is a byproduct of biodiesel production, containing impurities like methanol and soaps. It is used in animal feed, as a raw material for chemical synthesis, and in biogas production. Collected from transesterification processes, it is stored as a viscous liquid. Purification can yield refined glycerol for pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

This report presents the economics of 1,3-Propanediol (PDO) production from glucose syrup using a fermentation process similar to the one developed by DuPont. The economic assessment assumes a plant located in the United States.
Details: 50 kta United States-based plant | Q2 2024 | 107 pages | Issue A From $799 USD
The cost analyses presented in this report target a 50 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.
Bio-Propanediol Production from Raw Sugar
This study approaches the economics of 1,3-Propanediol (PDO) production from raw sugar using a fermentation process similar to the one developed by DuPont. Raw sugar is used as the feedstock, being first hydrolyzed to glucose and fructose (invert sugars), which are then fermentated to produce PDO.
