ICC - Process Overview Text: <h6>Product</h6> <p><b>PET</b>. Polyethylene Terephthalate (a.k.a. PET) is a thermoplastic polyester with an enormous market volume in bottle resin. The combination of properties like hardness and rigidity, dimensional stability, chemical resistance and lightweight, makes PET a flexible material widely used in several applications. It is also worth noting that PET is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family, and being a 100% recyclable material so broadly used, is the most recycled plastic worldwide.</p> <h6>Raw Materials</h6> <p><b>Ethylene Glycol</b>. Ethylene glycol, also known as monoethylene glycol or MEG, is the simplest diol, with chemical formula C2H6O2. Like other glycols, ethylene glycol undergoes reactions common to monohydric alcohols forming esters, acetals, ethers, and similar products. Most of monoethylene glycol has been produced from ethylene via ethylene oxide intermediate, generating di- and tri-ethylene glycol as well. Commercially, ethylene glycol is available in three grades: fiber grade, with min. 99.8% of purity; industrial grade with min. 99.5% of purity and antifreeze grade with min. 98% of purity.</p> <b>Chemicals</b>. </p> <b>PTA</b>. PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) is a key raw material in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), widely used in packaging, textiles, and plastic bottles. Its high purity ensures that it meets the quality demands of industries that require transparency and strength in their end products. PTA is produced via the oxidation of paraxylene in the presence of acetic acid. It is typically stored and transported as a white crystalline powder, which is easy to handle and distribute to manufacturers of PET and polyester fibers.</p>

ICC - Process Schematic Text: <p>The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Melt-phase Polymerization; and (2) Solid-state Polymerization.</p><p>Melt-phase Polymerization. Terephtalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol (MEG), and additives are mixed in the paste system and fed to three consecutive reactors: (1) esterification; (2) prepolymerization and (3) polycondensation. Water vapor formed and unreacted MEG are continuously removed and routed to MEG Recovery downstream. The resulting polymer is fed to a Pelletizing system, in which the molten PET is extruded, cooled, and then chopped into cylindrical shapes.</p><p>Solid-state Polymerization. The amorphous PET chips are directed to the Crystallization, where they are first submitted to a hot flow of nitrogen in order to prevent that PET chips stick together while the polymer moves through the glass transition temperature. The particles are then fed to the crystallizer itself, in which they achieve the minimum crystallinity to flow in the solid-state polycondensation (SSP) reactor, a long cylindrical hopper-type vessel, where high molecular weight polymer is formed. The PET product is further cooled, packed and stored.</p>

Initially, oligomers are produced by the esterification of PTA with ethylene glycol. The oligomer then undergoes a melt-polymerization and a solid-state polymerization, yielding PET.
