ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Phosgene. Phosgene is a highly reactive and toxic gas used in the production of polyurethanes, polycarbonates, and various chemical intermediates. It is a key raw material in isocyanate production, which is essential for creating durable plastics and coatings. Phosgene is produced by reacting carbon monoxide with chlorine and is typically stored as a compressed gas. Despite its hazardous nature, it remains indispensable in polymer manufacturing due to its efficiency in forming strong carbonyl bonds.

Raw Materials

Chemicals.
Chlorine. Chlorine figures among the most important chemical commodities. It is an indispensable intermediate in the chemical industry, employed in the manufacture of a multitude of end products (e.g. materials of construction, solvents, pesticides, etc). Most of chlorine produced on commercial scale is based on electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride (brine), which also generates caustic soda and hydrogen as co-products (chlor-alkali processes).
Carbon Monoxide. Like hydrogen, carbon monoxide is produced industrially from syngas, but it is recovered via cryogenic distillation. Carbon monoxide is used in the chemical industries for the synthesis of several compounds, like acetic acid, polycarbonates, polyketones; and also in the metallurgical industry for the creation of reducing atmospheres.

ICC - Process Schematic Image: //cdn.intratec.us/images/icc/process-schematics/248-A.jpg
ICC - Process Schematic Text:
The process under analysis comprises two major sections: (1) Reaction and (2) Purification.

Reaction. Carbon monoxide and chlorine gas are mixed and fed to vertical shell and tube reactors, where such components react generating Phosgene. The reactors are filled with activated carbon, which serve as catalyst. Excess carbon monoxide is used, so that all chlorine reacts in this step.

Purification. The effluent from the reactors is cooled so that the Phosgene generated is condensed and separated from recycle gas. The condensed Phosgene is chilled, passed through adsorber beds for the removal of chlorine and carbon tetrachloride and distilled – the high purity Phosgene obtained is then directly sent to consumers. The gas separated from the Phosgene, rich in carbon monoxide, is recycled. Vent gases purged throughout the process are scrubbed against a caustic solution to be freed from residual phosgene and other impurities.
