Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Methional production from acrolein and methyl mercaptan in the United States, via a typical reaction in the presence of triethanolamine.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Methional production and related Methional production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Methional production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Methional plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Methional plant operating costs (Opex).
The Methional production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Methional plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Methional plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Schematic

In this process the main raw materials are methyl mercaptan (supplied in gasesous) and acrolein (supplied as liquid).
As acrolein and methyl mercaptan react in liquid phase, the most effective way to carry out the Methional synthesis reaction is in a reactive absorber. A small portion of the acrolein feed is vaporized to be fed to the reactor as gas. This leads to higher Methional yields.
Refined acrolein gas is fed to the absorber bottom and is then contacted with a circulating liquid mixture containing mainly Methional, methyl mercaptan, acrolein liquid feed, and catalyst/stabilizer. This liquid mixture absorbs the gaseous reactants into the liquid phase.
In the liquid phase, acrolein reacts with methyl mercaptan generating Methional. Due to the high conversion and selectivity, no purification steps are needed.
