ICC - Process Overview Text:
Product

Isobutylene. Isobutylene (also known as Isobutene) is one of the butylene isomers, used as an intermediate in the production of MTBE, ETBE, isooctane, and methacrolein. Polymerization of Isobutylene produces butyl rubber. Most of times, C4 isomers are produced commercially as by-products from petroleum refinery/petrochemical processes. Isobutylene, specifically, can be produced on commercial scale from processes based on the dehydration of tert-butyl alcohol and on the catalytic dehydrogenation of isobutane.

Raw Material

Crude C4. Crude C4 is a fraction from the refining process containing hydrocarbons like butadiene, butenes, and butanes. It is used in the production of synthetic rubber, plastics, and fuels. Crude C4 is separated into its components through distillation and is stored as a gas or liquid. The butadiene extracted from this fraction is especially important for producing synthetic rubbers.

ICC - Short Description: This study presents the economics of Isobutylene production from a crude C4s stream in the United States., using an extraction process similar to Total Isobutylene Acid Extraction process. In this process, sulfuric acid reacts with isobutylene to form an alcohol that is separated from the crude C4 raw material and, through a dehydration step, isobutylene is recovered.
