Report Abstract
This report provides a techno-economic analysis of Gasoline production from wood chips in the United States using a fast pyrolysis process followed by a hydroprocessing step.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Gasoline production and related Gasoline production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Gasoline production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Gasoline plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Gasoline plant operating costs (Opex).
The Gasoline production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Gasoline plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Gasoline plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Products
Gasoline. Gasoline is a mixture of many organic compounds, mostly hydrocarbons containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms (branched-chain paraffins, cycloparaffins, olefins, and aromatics). It is a liquid suitable for use as fuel in spark-ignition of internal combustion engines (Otto engine). An important quality parameter is the octane level, which is a quantity that measures the antiknock properties of the fuel in comparison to a mixture of isooctane and heptane. Gasoline should have an octane number of at least 60 but optimized engines use Gasoline with higher octane levels. Bulk Gasoline trades commonly occur in the spot market, in which the commodity can be purchased for immediate delivery.
Renewable Diesel. Renewable diesel is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based diesel. It is produced from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste oils, through advanced hydrotreating processes. Renewable diesel offers significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and it meets the same performance standards as conventional diesel, making it a drop-in replacement. Unlike biodiesel, which is an ester-based fuel, renewable diesel is a hydrocarbon and can be stored, transported, and used in the same infrastructure as traditional diesel fuel. Its growing adoption is driven by environmental regulations and sustainability initiatives worldwide.
Raw Material
Wood Chips. Wood Chips are small pieces of wood used as a raw material in the production of paper, fiberboard, and energy. Their high moisture content makes them ideal for combustion in biomass power generation. Wood chips are obtained from forestry and milling operations and are stored in piles or silos. Their role in renewable energy production and pulp manufacturing is crucial for sustainable industries.
