Report Abstract
This report analyses the economics of a typical Copper(II) Sulfate production process from copper metal and sulfuric acid in the United States. Copper metal is reacted with dilute sulfuric acid and oxygen from air, yielding copper (II) sulfate,
The report provides a comprehensive study of Copper Sulfate production and related Copper Sulfate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Copper Sulfate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Copper Sulfate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Copper Sulfate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Copper Sulfate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Copper Sulfate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Copper Sulfate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Copper Sulfate. Copper II Sulfate (a.k.a. Cupric Sulfate) is an inorganic compound that can be found in many forms, with pentahydrate being the most common of them. The pentahydrate is a blue crystalline solid that can be converted to the monohydrate form by heating at temperatures above 110°C and to the anhydrous salt above 250°C.
Raw Materials
Copper. Copper is a conductive metal used in electrical wiring, electronics, plumbing, and industrial machinery. Its high conductivity and malleability make it essential for electrical and thermal applications. Copper is mined from ore deposits and refined through smelting and electrolysis. It is stored in sheets, wires, or ingots and is critical to industries reliant on electrical components and infrastructure.
Sulfuric Acid. Sulfuric acid is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals, serving as a key component in fertilizer production, mineral processing, and chemical manufacturing. It is also used in the refining of petroleum and metal ores. Sulfuric acid is produced via the contact process, where sulfur dioxide is oxidized and absorbed in water. It is stored as a liquid and is crucial for processes like phosphate fertilizer production and in lead-acid batteries.

Sulfuric Acid from Sulfur (Single-Contact Process)
This report presents the economics of Sulfuric Acid production from sulfur in the United States. In this process, sulfur is burned to form sulfur dioxide, which is then converted to sulfur trioxide. This sulfur trioxide is converted to sulfuric acid by absorption with recirculating sulfuric acid solution in water in only one column.
Details: 1,480 kta United States-based plant | Q2 2024 | 107 pages | Issue B From $999 USD
The cost analyses presented in this report target a 1,480 kta (kilo metric ton per annum per annum) United States-based plant. For those interested in cost analyses considering other plant capacities and/or locations, Intratec offers a customized analysis as an optional feature.
Sulfuric Acid from Spent Acid (Wet Gas Sulfuric Acid Process)
This report presents the economics of spent sulfuric acid regeneration via wet sulfuric acid (WSA) process in the United States. In this process, spent acid is decomposed to form sulfur dioxide and water. The sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfur trioxide, which is then regenerated to sulfuric acid by vapor-phase reaction with water.
