Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose production, starting from cotton linter, employing monochloroacetic acid and caustic soda. In this process, cellulose is alkalized with caustic soda and then mixed with isopropanol and monochloroacetic acid, before passing through an etherification reaction. The analysis approaches a plant in the United States using a process similar to the one developed by Hoechst.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Carboxymethyl Cellulose production and related Carboxymethyl Cellulose production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Carboxymethyl Cellulose production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Carboxymethyl Cellulose plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Carboxymethyl Cellulose plant operating costs (Opex).
The Carboxymethyl Cellulose production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Carboxymethyl Cellulose plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Carboxymethyl Cellulose plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview
Product
Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose. Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose is a water-soluble polymer used as a thickening agent, stabilizer, and binder in food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. It is derived from cellulose through chemical modification. Its ability to modify viscosity is essential in product formulations.
Raw Materials
Caustic Soda. Causic soda (NaOH), also known as sodium hydroxide, is a major inorganic used in several industries. Most of caustic soda production is used in the manufacture of chemicals, such as propylene oxide and sodium salts. Electrolysis of sodium chloride accounts for most of today’s installed capacity for caustic soda production, which also generates chlorine.
Cotton Linter. Cotton linter consists of short fibers remaining on cottonseeds after the ginning process. It is used in producing paper, cellulose derivatives, and as a raw material for making nitrocellulose and rayon. Collected from cottonseed processing, it is stored in bales. Its high cellulose content makes it essential for specialty paper production, including banknotes and high-quality writing paper.
