Report Abstract
This report presents the economics of a typical Calcium Gluconate production process from glucose, sodium bromide, and calcium carbonate in the United States. Initially, glucose dissolved in a sodium bromide solution is electrolyzed and is oxidized to gluconic acid. The resulting acid is then neutralized by calcium carbonate, producing calcium gluconate.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Calcium Gluconate production and related Calcium Gluconate production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Calcium Gluconate production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Calcium Gluconate plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Calcium Gluconate plant operating costs (Opex).
The Calcium Gluconate production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Calcium Gluconate plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Calcium Gluconate plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.
Process Overview

Product
Calcium Gluconate. Calcium Gluconate is a mineral supplement and medication. Supplementation may be done to treat or prevent osteoporosis or rickets, consequences of calcium deficiency. It can also be taken by mouth, but it is not recommended by injection into a muscle. For calcium therapy, Calcium Gluconate is a well established and the most accepted drug in the medical field. Calcium in its ionic form has been shown to be an excellent therapeutic agent for the treatment of diseases caused and aggravated by deficiency of Calcium in the body.
Raw Materials
PCC. Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is a high-purity form of calcium carbonate, manufactured through a controlled process using calcium oxide. It is widely used in the paper, plastics, paints, and rubber industries as a filler and coating agent, offering enhanced brightness and improved mechanical properties. PCC is produced by reacting calcium oxide with carbon dioxide, resulting in fine, pure particles. It is usually stored in dry powder form and can be easily transported to various industrial applications.
Glucose Syrup. Glucose (C6H12O6), also known as D-glucose and dextrose, is the most abundant sugar in nature. Commercial glucose products are available in both dry and syrup forms in a variety of purities and concentrations. Glucose uses include pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals and fuels. This compound is used as raw material in fermentative processes for the production of vitamins, organic acids, antibiotics, amino acids, enzymes, and polysaccharides.
Sodium Bromide. Sodium bromide is an inorganic salt used in the oil and gas industry for preparing dense drilling fluids, in water treatment as a disinfectant, and as a chemical intermediate in organic synthesis. Produced by reacting bromine with sodium hydroxide, it is stored as a white crystalline solid. Its application in clear brine fluids for drilling operations is essential for maintaining wellbore stability.
