Butanediol
Butanediol (also known as BDO and 1,4-Butanediol) refers to all butylene glycol isomers. The 1,4 Butanediol, the most common of them, is a versatile intermediate for the chemical industry mainly used in the production of polyurethanes and polybutylene terephthalate. Butanediol may also be produced from renewable sources. In such cases, it may be referred to as Bio-Butanediol or Green Butanediol. BDO can be produced from different raw materials. The conventional method starts from acetylene. Other processes use propylene oxide, maleic anhydride or 1,3-butadiene. The newest technologies being developed are bio-based pathways, which rely on bio-based succinic acid derived from biomass or a sugar substrate.
