Commodity Production Costs Report
Bio-Butanediol from Glucose (Succinic Acid as Intermediate)
Butanediol Operating Costs & Plant Construction Costs
This report examines the costs related to Butanediol production from glucose syrup. Initially, glucose is fermented to produce succinic acid, which is then hydrogenated to produce butanediol. The economic analysis is based on a plant constructed in the United States.
The report provides a comprehensive study of Butanediol production and related Butanediol production cost, covering three key aspects: a complete description of the Butanediol production process examined; an in-depth analysis of the related Butanediol plant capital cost (Capex); and an evaluation of the respective Butanediol plant operating costs (Opex).
The Butanediol production process description includes a block flow diagram (BFD), an overview of the industrial site installations, detailing both the process unit and the necessary infrastructure, process consumption figures and comprehensive process flow diagrams (PFD). The Butanediol plant capital cost analysis breaks down the Capex by plant cost (i.e., ISBL, OSBL and Contingency); owner's cost; working capital; and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up. The Butanediol plant operating costs analysis covers operating expenses, including variable costs like raw materials and utilities, and fixed costs such as maintenance, labor, and depreciation.

The process under analysis comprises four major sections: (1) fermentation; (2) succinic acid separation; (3) succinic acid hydrogenation; and (4) Butanediol purification.
* Fermentation. In the fermentation area, succinic acid is produced by fermentation of glucose using re-engineered yeast. The main fermentation is performed in fed-batch mode under anaerobic process conditions. The pH control is made by addition of a solution of ammonia.
* Succinic acid separation. The fermentation broth is centrifuged in order to completely remove cell biomass, passed through an activated carbon bed for color removal and fed to a distillation column form removal of water and ammonia. Succinic acid is crystallized, filtered and sent to the hydrogenation section.
* Succinic acid hydrogenation. Succinic acid cake is diluted with recycled water and fed to the hydrogenation reactor. The exothermic hydrogenation reaction is carried out at the temperature of about 150 °C with pressures of about 200 bar abs. While the succinic acid is totally consumed, the non-reacted hydrogen is recovered in a high-pressure flash vessel and recycled to the reactor.
* Butanediol purification. The liquid product from the reaction is directed to a drying column for the removal of water used in succinic acid dilution and generated in the hydrogenation reaction. Subsequently, the bottom product of the drying column is purified in two distillation columns and high-purity Butanediol (99.5 wt%) is obtained.
